“How much does a mobile tunnel cost?” is one of the first questions asked by anyone who needs covered space quickly. A PVC mobile tunnel costs far less than a masonry warehouse and is installed in a few days, but PVC mobile tunnel cost varies considerably from one project to another. In this guide we look at the items that make up the cost of a mobile warehouse tunnel, what pushes the quote up or down and how to request an accurate quotation first time.
Why there is no single price per square metre
Many people look for a price per square metre, but for a mobile tunnel that figure says very little. Two structures with the same floor area can cost different amounts because the clear span, height, local snow and wind loads, closures and anchoring method all change. That is why every GLG tunnel is sized for the actual site.
What makes up PVC mobile tunnel cost
1. Tunnel type
The type of structure is the first choice that affects cost:
- AutoGO, freestanding tunnel: stands on its own, anchored to the ground with reinforced concrete footings;
- SideGO single-pitch and SideGO dual-pitch: placed alongside the existing building;
- FrontGO, front tunnel: covers the area in front of doors and loading bays;
- ModulGO: modular tunnel with truss spacing of up to 5 metres;
- CapGO: steel structure with rigid roof panels.
A side or front tunnel makes use of the existing building; a freestanding tunnel requires a complete structure and its own foundations.
2. Dimensions: width, length, height
Width (clear span) matters more than length: the wider the span, the sturdier the trusses must be. Clear height also counts, especially if lorries or forklifts with raised loads need to pass through.
3. Snow and wind loads
The tunnel must be calculated for the climate zone and altitude of the site. In areas with heavy snow or strong wind, stronger structures and anchors are needed: it is a cost item, but it is also what makes the tunnel safe.
4. Anchoring and foundations
Footings, ballast or fixing to an existing slab: the solution depends on the ground and the expected duration of the installation. An already paved yard simplifies the work.
5. Gable end closures
An open tunnel costs less, but closures at the gable ends are often needed. You can choose a stacking high-speed door such as VertiGO, suitable for wind-exposed openings, or a non-motorised solution such as the PolyGO sliding curtain for openings with few passages.
6. Membrane, colours and accessories
Membrane colour, translucent strips for natural light, gutters, lighting and pedestrian doors are accessories added according to use.
7. Permits and design
In many municipalities a mobile tunnel requires a building application or at least a notification. Our technical department provides calculations and drawings to help your consultant with the paperwork.
Mobile tunnel or masonry warehouse?
| Criterion | PVC mobile tunnel | Traditional building |
|---|---|---|
| Lead time | Short, installed in a few days | Long, months of construction |
| Flexibility | Can be extended, modified or relocated | Permanent structure |
| Initial investment | Moderate | High |
| Foundations | Footings or light anchors | Full foundations |
How to get an accurate quote
To quote a mobile tunnel we need:
- the site address (for snow and wind loads);
- the required width, length and clear height;
- whether the tunnel will lean against a building or be freestanding;
- the type of paving or ground;
- the closures required at the gable ends;
- the intended use: storage, loading and unloading, vehicle shelter.
With this information we prepare a tailored offer. If you do not have all the data, a free site survey is the quickest way to get started.
