REI 60, REI 120, EI 60: when it comes to fire doors and fire shutters there are plenty of abbreviations, and they are not always clear. Choosing between fire doors EI 60 and EI 120 is not a detail: the class is set by the building’s fire safety design and people’s safety depends on it. In this guide we explain what the abbreviations mean, the difference between REI 60 and REI 120 and which fire-rated closure to use in different environments.

What does REI mean?

The three letters indicate the fire resistance performance of an element:

  • R, load-bearing capacity: the element maintains its structural function;
  • E, integrity: it prevents the passage of flames and hot gases;
  • I, thermal insulation: it limits the temperature on the side not exposed to fire.

The number that follows indicates for how many minutes the performance is guaranteed. For doors and shutters, which have no load-bearing function, the correct term is class EI (for example EI 60 or EI 120), even though in everyday language people still say “REI door”.

Fire doors EI 60 or EI 120: what is the difference?

The difference is time: a closure classified 60 resists for 60 minutes, one classified 120 for 120 minutes. The required class is not a matter of preference: it is specified by the fire safety design according to the activity, the fire load and the compartmentation of the building.

Class Resistance Typical use
EI 30 30 minutes Rooms with a low fire load
EI 60 60 minutes Common compartmentation in offices, commercial and industrial premises
EI 120 120 minutes Storage areas, activities with a high fire load, car parks

The table is indicative: the approved fire safety design always takes precedence.

GLG fire-rated closures

Fire doors

GLG fire doors are designed for public buildings and workplaces: they resist fire for a specified period, usually from 30 to 120 minutes, and provide essential protection in the event of a fire.

Sliding fire doors

Horizontal sliding fire doors are used to safely divide car parks, large retail outlets, multi-storey car parks and any area where fire compartmentation is required. They stay open during working hours and close automatically in the event of an alarm.

Installation and maintenance

A fire-rated closure only works if it is installed as certified and checked over time. After installation, the documentation and declaration of correct installation must be issued; periodic inspections are then required, as set out in fire safety regulations and the manufacturer’s manual. With G Services we also schedule these inspections.

Mistakes to avoid

  • choosing the class without consulting the fire safety design;
  • fitting non-certified accessories (panic bars, vision panels, door closers);
  • propping doors open with wedges or unapproved hold-open devices;
  • neglecting periodic inspections.
